Day 6 on Iceland’s Laugavegur Trail: Reflections on My Last Day in the Valley of Thor
All good things must come to an end. Lest we forget to appreciate them. Our final morning in Thórsmörk began—finally—with a leisurely coffee and the bacon and eggs we’d all been craving since our Laugavegur Trail adventure began.
We had to check out of our room by 10am. So we all made sure to have our things packed and outside the huts before breakfast. Once done it was time for one last short hike. More of a walk really. But what a walk. Up a steep hill it was for one last magnificent view of the surrounding area. Then a quick jaunt to a super cool spot called the singing cave. The cave echoes and amplifies people’s voices, hence the name. Finally, wouldn’t you know it, even here, in the middle of nowhere, we stopped at a gift shop/coffee shop.Because of course, did you really hike the Laugavegur Trail if you don’t have the t-shirt to prove it? A couple of hours later we all loaded up and on our bus for the long ride back to Reykjavik.
One last night in Reykjavik
Once back in town we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. This is always the awkward part. Especially when it happens at the end of a group trip, where everyone has bonded so well. What I’ve realized after being on several of these is that the groups are a bubble. They’re created for a specific purpose. Once that purpose is met the bubble bursts and that’s that. You’re left with your memories and maybe a couple more folks added to your social media channels. It’s all good though.
In any case, once off the bus, I found my way to the guesthouse I booked for the evening. I took a quick shower and rocked my way up to the bar at ROK. This is one my favorite Reykjavik haunts for dinner. Yes, what can I say? I’ve been here enough times to have favorite restaurants.
It’s funny when I flew in last week I genuinely thought this was likely my last time in Iceland. I mean it’s been three times. Completing the Laugavegur Trail was the last thing I truly wanted to do here. Right now, after taking one last walk to the waterfront and its sparkling Viking ship sculpture I’m not so sure. I mean, I am planning a trip to Greenland at some point. And I do have to fly through Reykjavik…right? ❤
Till we meet again Iceland.
Food and Accommodation:
Hotel: Downtown Guesthouse Reykjavik. It’s no secret that Iceland is outrageously expensive. Being there during high season only made it more so. This place is a no frills guesthouse where most rooms have shared bathrooms. Because I was arriving in the early evening and was only spending the night this fit the bill. And the location was great, super close to where I needed to pick up the airport bus the next day.
Dinner: ROK. https://www.rokrestaurant.is/As previously mentioned this is one of my favorite places in Iceland for dinner and drinks. It’s right across the street from Hallgrimskirkja Church. I’ve been here three times and it’s never disappointed. Without a reservation I was still able to rock up to the bar and have a lovely meal.
